Being a pastor today is not for the faint-of-heart. I know because I am one.

Here are a few articles related to ministry. If you find these resources helpful, feel free to share them with other leaders. Check back often for new content.

New Perspective

From the moment I came home from the hospital as a newborn baby until I left for college, I slept in the same bedroom. It was my room. Baseball cards, a few books, and other “valuables” were spread across my dresser. A Nerf hoop was clipped to the back of my door. The same two posters hung on my closet all throughout high school – John McEnroe and Peter Frampton.

Deposits and Withdrawals

In terms of financial health, the equation is fairly simple: don’t take out more than you put in. Unless you’re the federal government, most banks require you to have the money in your account before you can spend it. That’s one reason why credit card debt is so high – it’s easier to charge it now and pay later than to pay for it now. Unfortunately, what we end paying later is much greater than the original cost.

How to Tell a Good Story

Stories are powerful.

Parents tell stories to help their children find their place in the world. Coaches tell stories to inspire their players. Leaders tell stories to rally their teams to tackle a project or navigate a change.

Look for the Overlap

For some crazy reason, leaders in other organizations will contact me for advice. I usually chalk it up to desperation or having exhausted all other options. My price is pretty reasonable – it’s the price of a cup of coffee.

Vision Deposits

In terms of finances, I wish I would have learned the lesson of compound interest when I was twenty-five years old. But, as with many things, it’s better to learn the lesson later than not at all.

Common Sense, Common Practice

My father once told me something that you have probably heard in some shape or form. He told me, “Ken, if common sense was truly common then more people would have it.”

As I’ve thought about this over the years, I’ve come to realize that some people have truly uncommon sense – they are able to anticipate things others cannot. They see opportunities where others see a blank page or a problem. Many of our innovations and advances have originated from this uncommon outside-the-box thinking.

Interested or Committed?

Years ago, I had a coworker who every Thursday afternoon would say the same thing at the same time: “I’ve hit my 32.”

As in 32 hours. As in “my work week is now over and I’m leaving.” He would often update us on how many hours (or minutes) he had left before hitting his 32. The first time I heard it, I thought it was funny — then I realized he wasn’t joking.

Making Better Decisions

Do I start this post with a statistic or a gripping story? Should it be a short post or an expanded article? Focused on relationships, leadership, or organizational behavior? And when should I write it – today or tomorrow?

So many decisions.

How to Speed Up Your Team

Leaders are people who want to get things done. That’s why we lead teams, organizations, or businesses. We have dreams and visions, goals and objectives, and a finite amount of time in which to operate (i.e., no one lives forever!). And it often means having to work with people to get things done.

Dropping Anchors

Anchors. Big, heavy pieces of metal that sailors use to keep the wind or current from moving their ship. The ship may swing, sway, and be tossed around, but the anchor is there to keep it secure.

What is Senior Pastor Boot Camp?

It’s something I wish would have existed when I started as a Senior Pastor at the age of 21. You read that right – no typo – I was a 21 year-old “Senior” Pastor (which meant I was the only pastor). Through trial and error and the good fortune of God, I was able learn from my mistakes and keep moving forward.

Joining Our Community Will Help You:

Develop a focused, intentional approach to preaching

Preaching is one of your best tools to start conversations, mobilize your mission, and equip your people. Yet many preachers don't have a well-thought out plan for how to use their preaching for maximum impact. When we first got started, we kind of made it up as we went. Our labs focus on the craft of preaching, how to do sermon planning and scheduling, and how to use preaching to cast vision and form spiritually healthy disciples.

  • Discover why planning is your new best friend
  • Create a preaching calendar that moves people in the direction of your mission and vision
  • See how to foster greater creativity through series and sermon overviews

Become a better leader of people and culture

The mission of the church is accomplished through people. As a senior pastor, we work with a wide-variety of people - volunteers, paid staff, elder boards, and our critics. Many of us were never trained on how to create a healthy team culture or how to best find, hire, and onboard new team members (as well as how to best part ways when needed). Our labs will equip you with the systems and structures to develop people around you.

  • Take your team to the next level by developing a coaching culture
  • Learn how to embed core values into conversations, meetings, and your physical environment
  • Get an inside peak at the best way to structure your regular staff meetings

Connect stewardship and generosity to your vision

Once you see the benefits of having a generous church culture, you will look for every opportunity to teach people about good stewardship. You'll learn how to be more confident when teaching on money and when asking for money. You'll discover the power of "dripping" stewardship principles into your preaching throughout the year. Inside our labs, we discuss how to motivate people to give for the first time and to become regular givers.

  • Learn how to reposition the conversation about money
  • Discover the principles that encourage generosity
  • Follow proven steps to move people from tippers to tithers (and beyond)

Avoid being burned out and worn out

This section of the Senior Pastor Boot Camp may just save your marriage! And I'm not kidding. It took me nearly twenty years of being in full-time ministry before I discovered the self-care principles and practices that we share in our community. These are patterns of healthy living that enable us to be at our best and we avoid them to our own detriment. Learn from other Senior Pastors what has worked for them - as well as mistakes to avoid. Our labs will give you concrete, actionable ideas that can be implemented immediately.

  • Diagnose the symptoms of burn out before it’s too late
  • Develop healthy boundaries that are sustainable
  • Find the accountability you need to develop better habits and practices
